No one can help you... At least, not in the way you think. The words others speak, though they may seem to make sense, are not yours to follow as they are. For instance, my journey is not your journey, and my path is not your path. Even if the destination we seek is the same, how we reach it will always be different.
Consider this: If I wish to go to New York City, I might take Interstate 26 East to Interstate 40 East, connect to Interstate 81 North, then Interstate 78 East, and finally follow the New Jersey Turnpike to the Lincoln Tunnel into Manhattan. A very specific set of roads. But you, my friend, wherever you are, will have to take a completely different route. Your starting point, your circumstances, your obstacles, are all unique to you. The map that guides you is not the same as mine. So, even if we have the same destination, the roads you must travel will be very different from the ones I take. One may be smooth and straight; the other, filled with mountains or snowy roads, or perhaps a detour through an unfamiliar place.
Now, you may think that if you follow my footsteps exactly, you’ll reach the same place. But this, of course, is the illusion. Even if we want the same thing, the path to it is a reflection of who we are, where we start, and the obstacles that come our way. There is no one-size-fits-all map, no set of instructions that can be followed verbatim. What works for me will likely not work for you, because your vehicle — your mind, your experience, your situation — is different from mine.
And this is where many seekers fall into error. We look to gurus and sages, we admire their wisdom and their path, and we think, “If I follow exactly what they did, I will achieve the same results.” But that is not how it works. Instead, what you must learn from the masters is not the specifics of their journey, but how they approached the difficulties along the way. It is the attitude, the mindset, the willingness to meet each obstacle with clarity, creativity, and perseverance that matters.
You see, your ability to overcome the challenges you face — the mountains, the detours, the rough terrain — is the very thing that determines whether you reach your destination. The question is not, “How do I follow the guru?” The question is, “How do I approach the obstacles that arise in my own path?” Your way will be uniquely yours. But how you meet the challenges that appear before you is the true test of your journey.
So, don’t focus on the steps of others. Instead, look at the way they faced the inevitable difficulties and ask yourself: How can I cultivate that same resilience, that same awareness, that same clarity to navigate my own path? In that way, you will find your way — not by following, but by understanding how to move through the world with wisdom and grace.
This is the essence of life: the map is not the territory. The instructions are not the experience. What matters is how you move with what is, how you meet what comes, and how you learn from every twist and turn. So don’t search for the guru’s map. Search for the courage to create your own path.
